Description
This book is intended for Undergraduate students in Engineering who are doing their first level Thermodynamics course. Knowledge of thermodynamics is essential for students in branches such as mechanical and aerospace engineering, as it relates to the top level design aspects of many devices that they will encounter. The first level course in a sequence of courses on thermodynamics is quite important since almost all the concepts are taught in this course. Higher level courses deal with applications and their realizations in practical devices. Wherever possible, I have alluded to these aspects in this book, in order to give the students some idea of what they can expect next and how to utilize the knowledge gained here for actual applications. Readers who have read other text books on Engineering Thermodynamics should be able to see that the development of the material in this book to be quite different. Numerous examples are worked out in each chapter with the objective of illustrating how the concepts are used for the thermodynamic analysis of devices. Many of the examples are continued across chapters, with increasing complexity as they build on concepts that are discussed in each new chapter. My objective in following this approach is that, students, given the task of analyzing a new device should be able to do so easily with the knowledge gained from the examples and they should also be adequately prepared to do the higher level courses in thermodynamics, refrigeration, turbomachines, IC engines and gas dynamics.
